I am an experienced flute teacher and performer living in Portland, Oregon. I teach flute lessons out of my home in the South Tabor neighborhood in SE Portland.
I started playing the flute at the age of six while growing up in Denver, Colorado. I studied classical flute for many years under Pam Endsley, principal flautist for the Colorado Symphony. While studying music in college I became interested in jazz and began to focus on improvisation. I have played flute professionally in diverse musical settings including classical, jazz, theater music, african music, and gypsy swing.
I teach students of all ages and skill levels. Lessons are geared to the needs and interests of the student, while emphasizing fundamental musical principles. Lessons are taught in a fun, upbeat way. We focus on playing real music as soon as possible in the process.
Young people just starting out will find that they progress much faster with private lessons. Taking lessons early from a great teacher made all the difference in my musical development.
Many adults used to play flute in school band and want to pick it up again later in life. As I write about on my blog, these people are often surprised by how much they remember, and can often progress quickly with good teaching and practice.
