Play the Ukulele!
Ukulele lessons are available in person at my home in the South Tabor neighborhood of Portland. Online ukulele lessons are available through FaceTime or Zoom. All ages and skill levels are welcome. I teach the basics for beginners. For advanced students I can teach jazz, improvisation, and music theory. My diverse background allows me to teach a wide variety of students with different musical interests.
I’ve been playing ukulele for over 15 years, ever since I got one as a present. I fell in love with the sound, and I found it easier to play than guitar. Ukulele chords are simpler than guitar chords, the frets are smaller and it’s easier to press down the strings. Ukulele’s have 4 strings, and most chords only have 3 or 4 notes, so there is less to think about. Other than that, you can do almost anything on an ukulele that you can do on guitar. You can play jazz, country, rock, and of course Hawaiian music.
I have been fortunate enough to make a number of trips to Hawaii, where I have studied Hawaiian music and played with local musicians. Since the ukulele is a Hawaiian instrument, it is a great way to learn about the music and culture of the south Pacific.
